All you need to make homemade almond milk is four ingredients, a blender & a nut milk bag.
I never would have thought I’d make my own almond milk. It seemed like a ridiculous amount of work when I was perfectly happy with my store-bought options. Then I realized how unhealthy those options really were. First, they’re filled with a bunch of sugar, and even if they are unsweetened they contain gums and other preservatives which can be quite damaging to the gut.
Using a nut milk bag, I finally made my own almond milk and could not believe how easy it was! And it tastes great. The only downside is that it doesn’t last very long since there aren’t preservatives, so if you do not use the milk every day just make in small batches. You can also use the leftover pulp to make your own almond meal or flour! This recipe is Low FODMAP, anti-candida and paleo.
Homemade Almond Milk
- 1 cup almonds (can sub other type of nut)
- 4 cups water
- A splash of vanilla
- 1/2 tsp maple syrup (optional, for sweetness)
Soak almonds in 1-2 inches of water for 8-12 hours. You can either let them soak overnight, or put the nuts in water first thing in the morning to make later that day.
Next, drain and rinse off almonds. Put in blender with vanilla, maple syrup and 4 cups of water. Blend for a few minutes until fully mixed.
Then, pour the mixture into your nut milk bag (do this over a large bowl) and squeeze until the milk is fully strained.
Pour milk into pitcher or glass jar and store in the fridge. Should last 3-5 days, you may need to stir/gently shake each time as it can separate a bit.
Hope you enjoy! Let me know if you try a different nut and how it works!
I really need to try this.
Please do!
Homemade is so much better. I don’t always make it, but when I do, I really like it 🙂
